Welcome Message from the Gaddafi Foundation
THE GADDAFI FOUNDATION - 08/06/2009
Welcome Message from the Gaddafi Foundation

The tasks taken on by the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation show the humanitarian dimension behind its specific structure and aims. Subjects such as human rights, poverty and prisoners of war are a fundamental part of an uneasy human sensitivity today. Images of almost insurmountable suffering and endless toil are part of our everyday lives. The only way out is through continual effort and an optimistic view of a better future, which humanity must work together to build. That is our most important message, and we are working as hard as we can to bring it to as many people as possible. This travelling exhibition is working towards this aim, which the Gaddafi International Foundation wants to present to an interested public of experts and critics in various capitals around the world.

The works by Saif El Islam El Gaddafi, Fawzi Swei and Salaheddine Shagroun brought together here are very different and represent very varied stylistic directions, although there is one linking element shared by all these artists. This is expressed in their specific relationship to their direct environment and the world around them. It expresses their extraordinariness: the troubled world in which we live is the only one we have. We have no choice other than to make a decisive start, to make this world into the best of all possible worlds.

Libya has always been an interface for cultural interaction. Civilisations were born here which have remained anonymous due to their age and the lack of any written evidence. Yet they have left indelible traces. However, these are so widely scattered that it is difficult to discover them unless we search in the very heart of the desert. It has become clear that it is precisely here that one of the first serious attempts by humanity to become settled and to let life triumph can be seen.

The exhibition evokes various scenes from very different walks of life. There are scenes in which the desert is a powerful presence. The relationship between the artist and desert life appears here in a seductive and deep variety. It allows us to breathe new life into an area that seems to be right on the edge of life, if we bring the art it has generated into the foreground. It is this which gives us our freedom and continually updates our spirit with the aid of a never ending inspiration.
