Fawzi Omar Swei
TAHER AL-MAGHRABI - 08/06/2009
Fawzi Omar Swei

Fawzi Swei’s passion for reproducing his subjects as exactly as possible has already made him an artist whose style is respected as something special amongst Libyan artists. His favorite themes are often old objects, either from traditional or everyday Libyan life. Fawzi Swei distinguishes himself with this painting style as a shy and quiet student. His studies in the area of the fine arts and later in the area of film distributed to the deepening of his experience in this area. His Jihad-inspired work ‘The Martyr’ portrays an ammunition belt attached to a wall, immediately next to the portrait of Moujahed and his son.

An old gas lamp, a pair of simple sandals, the green pepper, the empty cement bag or the paper bag, from which a few photos protrude and which lies next to a small wooden frame – all of these pictures bear witness to this artist’s great ability to devote his entire attention to detail.

In general the composition of Fawzi Swei’s works – in particular the still life – is from an elevated angle of vision, which allows a complete view of the subject. The light is directed in such a way that it illuminates the entire picture and allows all details to be seen. Every surface reflects the light at its own intensity and highlights the object’s own irregularities. The choice of colours and the emphasis of the surfaces mean that the subjects are portrayed exactly as they are in reality. You can see the shine of the metal, the reflections in the glass, the suppleness of the leather, and the shimmering of light on fruit or photographic paper.

Fawzi Swei has also designed many placards for information campaigns: both political and local, but above all in connection with the challenge of imperialistic hegemony. The aesthetics of the placards and the film trailers, which were made with similar techniques and styles in larger dimensions, had a far-reaching influence on the artistic trends of modern art in industrialised consumer societies. Nonetheless Fawzi Swei does not allow himself to be connected with a particular artistic school such as hyper-realism or any other movement. He is more a great amateur with a realistic idea, which usually finds its outlet in photography, drawings, cinema or the new computer-aided techniques.

Fawzi Swei has gained some experience in the area of publishing, in particular for the publication of his own works and that of circulars. This explains the influence of this area on his work. His style and his technique have also influenced a group of young artists active in the press and in the illustration of advertising and information.
